Ashlee Powers shares her story!

2/15/21

I didn't have a lot growing up. Before moving to Newport Beach (in a mobile home, might I add), we lived in a low income community in a house owned by my grandma. That was a step up, because when I was even younger, we lived in only one of the 5 bedrooms with a bunch of strangers.

Newport Beach was a sacrifice and it put our family in more financial strain than ever. My mom brought home one paycheck for 5 of us just so we can run at Corona del Mar HS. I'm embarrassed to say this, but even buying running shoes was a big to do. I would either have to call my estranged father, because I was the "stronger" personality - this would later lead to the end of our relationship or if I was lucky, Coach Sumner would have a lightly used pair for me to run in.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of the adults would "sponsor" me to go to altitude camp with the team. To make up for the debt, I would help with my Coach's non-profit, Magic Shoe, and do his outreach calls when needed. This feeling of helplessness and needing others to step in to support me made me embarrassed to seek out help, but also inspired me to make something of myself and running to make their efforts worth it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is why I am POWERFUL, and why Jordynn's new foundation JW Believe Foundation speaks to me. JW Believes raises money for youth athletes all over the world to provide financial aid and essential gear, helping those in need. As someone who was in that position growing up, I understand the importance of a Foundation like this. I know I was not alone. I was fortunate enough to have adults around me who believed in me, and I am now paying forward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

By purchasing this shirt or other merchandise on her site, you too can be a part of the change and support youth athletes in need. 100% of proceeds goes towards the JW Believe Foundation.
